The specific geographic and topographical features of Taiwan are characterized by steep river slopes with fast-running waters. Whenever significant rainfall occurs, low-lying areas are easily flooded and when unequal rainfall distribution dries up the rivers, drought usually results. The government has made flood disaster prevention and flood water storage development to ease drought as important policies.
